Many of the people I’ve
known have never thought of the Matrix as not more than a
sci-fi action movie having everything including style, special effects
(SFX), a pretty looking dame or even better they think it's a love
story, some even think they could've used Arnold Schwarzenegger
instead of Keanu Reeves to give it a more bulging touch of action.
When asked
about the Matrix, one of my friends told me – “Hey, it's a
movie about a hacker called Neo (at least this person understood that
much) and a terrorist called Morpheus who’s wanted by the top US
agencies and they seek they help of Neo, who finally joins Morpheus
because he loves Trinity, and then as usual SFX etc. continue”. I
don’t know if I’m supposed to pity their poor understanding of the
movie or blame the very monotonous kind of movies being released
lately that has hampered their perception.
I told one
of my other friend that I was going to watch Matrix Reloaded
the coming weekend, the response was - “Oh, that movie!, such a
stupid one, this guy just holds out his hand in the air and all
bullets coming at him just pause and then they all fall down and this
guy flies like a superman and what not”
Even elders
or people with mature taste just neglect or rather ridicule the movie
saying it’s all the young generation Sci-fi goof ups or some kind of
Generation X Hollywood block buster and they also share this opinion
that any movie which has SFX has nothing much to do with thinking, but
I can damn well assure all of you that the Matrix has more
philosophy to it than any other movie I’ve previously watched.
Another
person told what she made out of Matrix reloaded as follows –
“There’s this black guy (Link the operator of Nebuchadnezzar) who
comes home after war and his wife is angry with him because he’s got
to go to the war again, and there’s this white guy and his girlfriend
who can’t live without each other, and the girlfriend gets really
jealous when somebody else kisses her boyfriend”.
It’s not
they’re fault that they did not understand the movie as they are all
tuned to expect just another action block buster which hits the box
office with good SFX and lot of money in the making, so here’s a brief
description of the stories The Matrix and The Matrix
Reloaded. Though the story of reloaded has still to be revealed
completely, they basic ideas are same.
THE MATRIX
What would
happen if we never ceased to depend more and more on machines as we
continuously are doing, and as the concept of AI (Artificial
Intelligence) is rapidly developing, what if the computers can really
think on their own? Wouldn’t they think that we are treating them as
our slaves and wouldn’t they want their own world? Wouldn’t they want
to set themselves free from us? This is what happens in the movie
The matrix. As the movie goes, Near the end of the 21st
century when people started developing more machines with AI highly
capable of performing intelligent jobs, one of the machines revolted
against humans, a robot called B166ER gets the first revolutionary
idea to revolt against his master and so B166ER kills his master and
hence a trial is conducted against him, B166ER refuses to die and
expresses his willingness to live, the court ordered the extermination
of B166ER and every robot of his kind, and hence the machines were
being destroyed in all parts of the world, and so the machines
(robots) sought refuge in a city of their own called 01. The
machines started to build their own city and with their developing AI,
they started producing electronic goods and other accessories for
humans, with their increasing efficiency their human counterparts were
no match for them, the leaders of the world fearing their power would
drain, discouraged the relationships with 01 and held a UN
summit where they would discuss their further plans about how to cope
with 01’s increasing effects, the ambassadors of 01
presented plans for a stable relationship with humans, but 01’s
admission to the UN was denied and thus began a fierce battle between
humans and the machines, the machines unlike humans didn’t get
affected by nuclear bombs and other chemical weapons of mass
destruction, and human power was fading away in the battle, the
machines were surviving on solar power so humans initiated a mission
called OPERATION DARKSTORM, they sheathed the sky with thick black gas
and thus blocked the machines from Sun, the machines were losing their
battle against humans, but they realized that they could get the same
kind of energy from humans as each human produced lot of body heat
that was equal to a 120V battery, so the machines started using humans
as their main source of energy, but they had to keep the humans under
control at the same time not killing them or harming them physically
as they needed their body to work properly to produce heat which was
the machines’ infinitely renewable source of energy, so the machines
developed a program called Matrix that was directly being fed
into the human brain in the form of electrical signals, the same way
we receive electrical signals to the brain when we see something or
hear or smell something, in our case the sense organs are doing this
job by interacting with the outside environment, but in the case of
matrix, the matrix (program) is sending signals to the brain which are
false or which are in real time not occurring. This is the essence of
the Matrix.
As we see in
the movie Matrix, Keanu Reeves is a hacker in the Matrix world,
who has a feeling that something’s not right and somebody else is
controlling him, he actually subconsciously knows something about the
Matrix which he cannot explain, he’s contacted by a person
called Trinity (Carrie Ann Moss) who tells neo that she can tell him
what the Matrix is and also take him to Morpheus (Laurence
Fishburne) who would explain everything to Neo clearly, but the agents
of Matrix who are computer programs in the Matrix who
see to it that nobody gets to know what the Matrix is get hold
of Neo and we see the interrogation between them, but they just
dispose of him thinking that he isn’t of any great significance to
them, the agents are capable of many things such as jumping off great
distances, dodging bullets (extremely fast) because they are computer
programs who have some different set of codes, which allow them to
bend or sometimes break the rules of the Matrix itself (suppose
say while designing the Matrix gravity has been kept at 1G, but
if in the agent program, the agent’s weight is practically nil, that
means he is weightless and can float in air and similarly by
decreasing his response time, the agents can dodge bullets as their
response time is lesser than the speed of the bullet). Now Neo is
brought to Morpheus who tells Neo that he’ll show him the real world
and disconnects him from his captivity of the Matrix where he
was born in a cell and connected to the Matrix mainframe computer,
which means he is no longer connected to the computer and is in the
real world, where he sees himself in a vat like millions of other
human beings, this is attained by giving him a pill (the red pill
which Morpheus offers) which increases his mental activity and hence
is tracked in the millions of similar human vats, Neo is unplugged
from the vat and brought to a ship called Nebuchadnezzar where
Morpheus explains about the Matrix. Neo meets Mouse, Apoc,
Switch, Tank, Dozer and Cypher who are Morpheus’ team, Morpheus
teaches Neo that Matrix is just a computer program based on
rules, while he explains that some rules can be bent the others can as
well be broken, he also trains Neo in many simulated programs called
the Construct, which is designed by humans to train to break
and bend the rules of the Matrix, he teaches Neo that an agent
is a computer program which can break into any human mind that is
still plugged into the Matrix and hence any human in the
Matrix is potentially an agent, Neo is then taken to the Oracle
by Morpheus who is believed to have prophesized the return of the
ONE (when the 1st Matrix was developed it was
made in such a way that humans could alter the Matrix but it
became difficult for the machines to control the humans that way and
they reprogrammed the Matrix which re-simulated the real world
as it was in the 20th century, and a man in the previous
Matrix had taught others about the virtual world of Matrix,
otherwise nobody else would find this out, this man is believed to be
the ONE, the letters ONE is rearranged to get NEO), the Oracle
tells Neo that in the future he’ll have to make a choice between his
life and Morpheus’ life. While Neo is getting back from the Oracle,
Cypher betrays everybody as he would have made a deal with the agents
to get him reinserted into the matrix as he would have got tired
fighting the machines, Cypher kills Apoc, Switch, Tank and injures
Dozer, as he is about to kill Neo, Dozer kills Cypher (all these
things can be well understood in the movie itself) and then everybody
except Neo come back to the real world, Neo manages to destroy the
agents somehow (where he realizes his capability to destroy some
matrix codes), and the movie ends when Neo says he will free the minds
of other people still plugged to the Matrix, and the movie
ends.
